Halfpennys is the NT’s law firm that people feel comfortable coming to

Its partners Richard Henschke and Cathy Spurr are respected senior practitioners with more than 65 years experience between them. But they’re as welcoming to a young, first-time client as they are their very wealthy ones, many of whom have grown up with the firm.

Halfpennys was established in Darwin in 1977 by lawyer Neil Halfpenny. The firm moved from the original building in Woods Street to Mitchell Street in 1990 before moving to its current location at the beginning of 2018.

The firm has strong commercial, workers’ compensation, personal injury, leasing, and wills and estates practices and can help with most other general areas of law.

It’s the sort of firm the average Territory family could come to (if there is such a thing). That means, we don’t do things like offshore mergers because that’s not part of the average family picture.

What we do is very personal for us

• We work for people — not clients — and we take their matters personally.
• We have a ‘care factor’ that’s not always there in larger firms because it can’t be.
• We’re a small firm because we believe in those values and want to keep delivering on them.

The ‘big-firm culture’ is not for us; we know our clients value the partnership we have with them, the level of service they get and the price they pay for it. They’re not terribly interested in an enormous boardroom.

And we regard our people as people — not fee earners.

Our team is loyal and dedicated to our clients and to the firm, and we support and cultivate them in return.

We also think it’s important to support the community we operate in and contribute by acting pro bono for organisations like the RSPCA and the NT’s Down Syndrome Association.
